Now seen as one of the most iconic sports movies of all time, Caddyshack is getting even more attention thanks to a recent article by Kyle Ryan of AV Club.com.
Did you know that Grande Oaks Golf Club in Fort Lauderdale was the golf course used as the backdrop for the film? For the longest time I thought it was Indian Hill Country Club in Winnetka, IL, just a few miles north of downtown Chicago. Turns out that Chicagoland’s unpredictable weather forced the production crew to search for another location with more favorable forecasts.
Despite being located in Florida, Grande Oaks was also promising for the film’s storyline of a Midwest run-of-the-mill golf club due to the absence of palm trees on the course layout. Those sneaky Hollywood types sure know how to pull one over on us, eh?
While the film used multiple locations for various scenes, including a nearby public pool for the famous “candy bar swimming pool scene”, most of the film was exclusively shot at Grande Oaks. While the course is now completely different from what we see in the 1980 movie, you can still buy your fair share of Caddyshack memorabilia from the pro shop.
