Performance Friday: Armchair Sessions With Ian Poulter

Unless you’re one of the experts giving these lessons, you could probably use a little help with your golf game. The weekend is coming and that means it’s time to play some golf! It also means it would be in your best interest to brush up on your game or face the consequences and ridicule from the other members of your foursome.

Fret not, hackers, duffers and less-than-good golfers of the world, Back9Network is here to help. This week’s Performance Friday comes courtesy of Oakley and 12-time European Tour winner Ian Poulter.

Lob Shot from the Bunker
“I need that ball to get up in the air very, very quickly or it’s going to hit the face of the bunker. I’m going to be aiming slightly left of my target. I’ve got a 60-degree sand iron. I want to aim — my feet, my knees, my hips, my shoulders — left of the target.”

Hitting a Draw
“I’m going to move the ball 15-20 yards right to left in the air. Aim your feet, your knees, your hips, your shoulders 20 yards to the right, close the club face slightly and swing along the line of your body.”

Importance of Correct Club Alignment
“The first tip I have for you all playing golf: club alignment. In general, alignment is key to hitting a good golf shot. If you’re not aligned to your target, you’re never, ever going to be able to hit a good golf shot.”

Getting Out of Trouble
“Take the club required to hit the ball low and accurately through the trees. First thing you want to do is grip down the shaft a little bit; extra help for accuracy. I’m going to move the ball slightly further back in my stance. What you want to do is drive through impact position and hold the clubface square to your target line.”
