In many downtown areas, there’s a Starbucks every few blocks. Sometimes they’re literally across the street from each other, which is ridiculous – until you realize that both have a steady stream of customers.
This is not the case in downtown Flint, Mich., however. There are a couple Starbucks nearby, but none in the immediate downtown area. How ever do the downtown workers get through their days?
To the rescue comes Café Rhema, a coffee shop featuring a vintage 1920s atmosphere. New stores are not popping up all over town, but for those who can’t just walk next door to get their java, Café Rhema will bring it to you – in a vintage golf cart.
The coffee cart runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and delivers anywhere downtown. It boasts a longer frame, motorcycle tires and an aluminum grill, and even headlights for those rainy, cloudy days. The electric cart is red and gold, and sports a Buick hood ornament, even though it’s not Buick-made (Buick is based in nearby Detroit). Andrew Paleno is the lucky employee who gets to drive it.
“We were trying to think of something that would draw attention and do delivery at the same time,” said Michael Thibodeau, manager of Cafe Rhema.
