Waste bunkers are natural sandy areas, usually very large and often found on links and tropical courses. They are not considered penalty areas, according to the USGA Rule Book.

Unlike a fairway or greenside bunkers, you are permitted to ground you club. You are also allowed to remove loose impediments from the area around the ball.
