Fairway bunker shots are difficult for a lot of people because it’s hard to contact the ball solidly out of the sand. Also many times you might have a lip in front of you and you have to get the ball up over that lip as well.
You can play two different golf clubs out of fairway bunkers — either an iron or a hybrid. You want to pick a club that’s not going to bring that lip into play even if you skull it because then it’s like a penalty shot.
If you leave it in the bunker, or hit way behind it with an iron, it’s basically a wasted shot. You’re trying to really advance the ball — not necessarily on the green, but up near the green.
