For those of you who sometimes miss the fairway and find yourself on a par-5 in the rough, and you want to get your ball back on the fairway so you can hit the green, this is a simple way to get back out. I’m going to grip down on the club and put the ball off my right ear, so I’ll have more of a descending blow. My stance is narrow, weight left, so my lower half is very, very stable. I’ll take a short swing back and land the club on the back of the ball.
For the knockdown, I get my feet more narrow than normal, weight left, ball slightly back in the stance and swing three-quarters. I want to get into my left side and hold the clubface through impact to hit a relatively straight shot. My arms control the swing and my body follows.
