Watch a pro warm up and you might notice a little takeaway move they like to rehearse. They’re watching for positioning in a few key places in order to produce the most powerful and accurate ball flight. A proper takeaway sets the whole swing in motion. It’s a domino effect.

If you struggle with an inside takeaway — which leads to coming down over the top and steepening the shaft, resulting in pulls and weak cuts — then there are likely a few anatomical causes you can correct to get your swing on-plane. The three swing components to consider are how the pelvis is moving, how the arms are rotating and how the wrists operate. Once those are in sync, you’ll see better results from the downswing.
