Off-center strikes with woods produce what’s called a “gear effect,” causing the ball to spin off line in either direction. When a ball comes off the toe, the face of the club opens up and the ball gets sling-shot with more left spin. If you miss closer to the heel, the face closes down and the ball gets sling-shot to the right.

There are a number of products you can use to spray the face of your club and identify where your common miss occurs, allowing you to make the necessary adjustments.
