Golf Digest’s No. 1 Teacher Mark Blackburn breaks down the key fundamentals for hitting up on the ball — the move that helps golfers launch it high with low spin for maximum distance.
Unlike an iron, where the club strikes down and compresses the ball, a driver swing should deliver the club on the upswing. Blackburn recommends setting up with a slight tilt — lead side higher than trail side — creating a reverse “K” at address. This helps position the club in line with the lead shoulder at impact and encourages a wide, shallow arc through the ball.
Use a wider stance, stay athletic, and let the club travel up and through impact. With the right setup and motion, you’ll hit longer, straighter drives without having to swing harder.
