There are still people who believe that golf is a straight-line game. For that to be the case, you would need to stand on your target line and play your shot directly where you are looking, like bowling or darts.

Golf is played from the side, meaning that there is an arc involved, with the only straight-back, straight-through piece of the swing occurring at address and impact; the rest of the athletic motion happens on an arc around your body.
