David Feherty has made quite a name for himself since his playing days covering golf on TV thanks to a combination of quick wit, humor and a wealth of experience. After retiring from competition in 1997, Feherty joined CBS to do on-course reporting and in 2011 he launched his own talk show on Golf Channel, which has aired more than 100 episodes.
In 2016 he left CBS and joined NBC Sports and is still providing some of the best in golf commentary. NBC and Golf Channel just wrapped up hosting The 147th Open Championship, during which Feherty featured prominently.
With Feherty’s one-liners still ringing in our heads on this major Monday, here are 21 memorable Feherty quotes, plus some great clips from his show.

Phil Mickelson made his Feherty debut in 2017 with a must-watch two-hour event. Phil brought the heat with his leather jacket and magnetic personality. In this clip, Lefty explains what’s going through his mind the moment he sees the lie of his next shot, and it is astounding.
Feherty on Mickelson’s Style of Play
“Watching Phil Mickelson play golf is like watching a drunk chasing a balloon near the edge of a cliff.”
Feherty Tells a Story Phil’s Mother Told Him
“Phil is brilliant, but he’s nuts. There’s something not quite right about that boy. Phil is watching a movie that only Phil can see. His mother told me, ‘Phil was so clumsy as a little boy, we had to put a football helmet on him until he was 4 because he kept bumping into things.’ I told her, ‘Mary, Mary, I’m a writer, you can’t keep handing me material like this.’ So the next time I saw Phil I said, ‘You didn’t really wear a football helmet in the house until you were 4, did you?’ He said, ‘It was more like 5.’”
