If you needed a reason to get off of the golf course in inclement weather, some sad news out of Colorado is a cautionary tale for all golfers trying to fit in a few more holes before the storm hits. Two 23-year-old golfers were struck by lightning on Tuesday outside of Denver.
One of the two golfers struck by lightning Tuesday night at the Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada has died, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
The golfer, identified as 23-year-old Peter Hawkes from Boulder, was struck at around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday. He was first taken to Lutheran Medical Center, but later transferred to the University Hospital burn unit, where he succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday morning.
People on the course reported seeing a bright flash of light, and then watching Hawkes hit the ground. He appeared to take a direct hit.
The strike came from a strong storm that swept through the Denver metro area Tuesday night, bringing with it hail, lighting, heavy rains and high winds.
