If you play golf long enough, it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll find yourself walking to a ball that came to rest on the wrong hole.
Unfortunately for a Memphis man earlier this month, his errant shot drew the ire of the wrong golfer.
Mark Coleman, a Memphis community leader, hit an errant shot that upset fellow golfer Wesley Caldwell.
Caldwell angrily threw Coleman’s ball in another direction and then proceeded to strike Coleman in the head with a club. Coleman tried to walk away after being struck, but became disoriented and had to be taken to the hospital for emergency surgery for bleeding on the brain.

Coleman remained in the hospital after suffering “significant brain injuries” from the assault.
Caldwell was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, but has since been released on $5,000 bond. His next court appearance is set for January 17, 2023.
The NAACP is calling for the charges against Caldwell to be raised from aggravated assault to attempted murder.
“Mr. Coleman has been a fixture in Memphis civic life for some time,” the NAACP said in a statement. “While we continue to pray for Mark, we will also continue to demand justice for Mark and for all of those impacted by violence in our community.”
