Competitive golf is a completely different test than your normal weekend game.
Ending a hole with your ball in your pocket and an “X” on the scorecard typically isn’t a big deal, but when you’re playing in a sanctioned event, you need to suck it up and find a way to get your ball in the hole no matter what.
That’s what happened to high school senior Will Reeves in a recent Washington Junior Golf Association District 5 Sub-District tournament. Reeves got off to a solid start birdieing his first hole, and got to the seventh hole 3-over par through six.
That’s when disaster struck and his resolve was tested.

Reeves ended up carding a septendecuple-bogey 21 on the par-4 to take him to 20-over par for the round. While there’s no official account of what happened, there is out of bounds left of the hole.
To Reeve’s credit, he bounced back with a par and birdie to close out his front nine to shoot a 53. He would go on to fire a 39 on the back nine and sign his card for 92.
Good on him for fighting through the 21, finishing strong and signing his card.
