Golfers Do Impressions of Famed Announcer Ivor Robson

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say. But in the case of Ivor Robson, the voice of the Open Championship, many can imitate yet none can duplicate the distinctive voice and style of one of golf’s most underrated personalities.

Many players took the chance to imitate the legend before this year’s Open Championship in a report for ESPN. Some guys have it down pat. Others? Ehhh, not so much.

This year marks the 143rd playing of the Open Championship. Ivor Robson has been announcing the players ever since the 103rd. That year (1974), Gary Player beat Peter Oosterhuis by two shots. Since then, Robson has taken the job he loves so much very seriously.

“I absolutely love this job,” Robson said in an interview. “I don’t fool about. This job requires total and utter concentration.”

Robson’s job goes far beyond what we all hear. He is responsible for much more than just introducing the players to the spectators.

“I call the players to the tee and furnish them with their cards, hole information, any local rules, and any other relevant information they require,” Robson said. “I also check they’re playing with an approved ball and with the correct number of clubs. And of course, I make sure they stick to time. Everyone is treated the same – I’m unbiased and I have to be seen to be unbiased.”

His attention to detail even saved Ignacio Garrido from a two-stroke penalty in the 1998 Open Championship, when the player showed up with 15 clubs. After 40 years behind the mic, Robson shows no signs of slowing down. As thankful for that as we are, Robson seems to be just as much, understanding how important his job is.

“It’s not a job you can just take for granted,” he said. “You’ve got to treat it with a lot of respect. You’ve got to understand that you’re in the public eye. You can’t go out on the town the evening before and just show up in the morning.”
