If golf had a go-to guy for talking about hitting the golf ball a long way, it would be John Daly. Long John revolutionized the game when burst onto the scene in the early 1990s, and it’s a credit to his staying power that he is still bombing it into his 50s.
So, when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted an impressive picture of himself hitting a drive that he claimed went 490 yards, JD was a little more than skeptical. Talking with a TMZ cameraman, Daly explained in no uncertain terms that the Rock was full of it.
Daly’s reasoning was simple: he has been one of the longest drivers in the game for going on three decades and he’s seen the guys who can hit it past him. The longest drivers in the world — the men who train and compete in long drive competitions — can’t hit the ball much over 400 yards, Daly argued, much less get it up there near 500.
The longest drive recorded at The RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship was 473 yards, so unless the Rock got some help from a cart path or a perfectly placed sprinkler head, John Daly is probably standing on some pretty solid ground.
