Whispering Rock Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa really took it on the chin Tuesday evening as a fire ripped through their maintenance shed with damages estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.
KCAU-TV Sioux City has the full report:
At 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night, 22 firefighters rushed to the scene to contain the 100-foot flame fire, and successfully put it out 12 hours later.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but for the golf club’s director of golf, the equipment is not what mattered the most to him.
“Initially you always worry about people; buildings can be rebuilt, equipment can be replaced, people cannot,” says Jeff Kuhn, director of golf. “So first and foremost [worry about], the people, the firefighters, public safety, all those things. From there, let nature take its course. There’s nothing we’re going to be able to do other than put out the fire and assess the damage from there.”
The golf course was shut down for damage assessment and public safety concerns on Wednesday but the staff says due to the incredible amount of community support and help from local golf clubs, they are expecting to be up and running by 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
While you have to admire Mr. Kuhn’s Phil Mickelson-like positive outlook, you can’t help but feel for this local-muni. At least insurance is expected to cover most to all of the damages.
