Winning the Masters doesn’t come without some luck, and during Patrick Reed’s whirlwind New York City press tour on Monday, he shared with CNBC’s Closing Bell that he has been carrying around a few special talismans since his last trip to Wall Street.
Back in 2016, Reed closed the New York Stock Exchange in memorable fashion, breaking the gavel into two pieces prior to teeing it up in The Barclays that week at Bethpage Black. Reed would go on to win that week and ever since the broken gavel has been his good luck charm.

“I broke the gavel right before The Barclays, which is now The Northern Trust, and I went off at Bethpage and won the tournament,” Reed explained. “We were like, ‘you know what, that’s special.’ It’s a very important piece to us, a very good luck charm. I actually carried it around in my suitcase for five or six months with us on the road and that was a good luck charm.
“They also gave me a commemorative coin earlier in the day and I’ve had that in my backpack nonstop. It has not left. It’s still in the backpack that’s in the car here and it was in there with me at Augusta.”
Reed was in New York for the media crush, hitting all the big shows and he even dropped in courtside on a New York Knicks game to hang out with Chris Rock.

Reed made stops at CBS This Morning and then made his way to Kelly and Ryan on ABC.

Reed also was an honorary opener for the day of trading at the New York Stock Exchange and gaveled the session open with applause. Reid’s relationship with Wall Street is interesting.
In an interview with CNBC, Reed explained him not having an equipment sponsor this year and how sponsors didn’t flock to him after he left Calloway Golf last year. Reed has a clothing deal with Nike, but no club deal. He has a mixed bag now with a Ping driver, Titleist and Callaway Irons and Artisan Golf wedges. He played with Pro V1 balls at The Masters.
“This has freed me up to use whatever equipment I want,” Reed said. “On the equipment side, I’m just out there doing my thing. I’m using whatever I want to use. I’m able to put 14 golf clubs and a golf ball in the bag that I feel are the perfect fit for me. To do that and come out with my first major, it was a risk. But it was a risk that was the right one.”
Reed ended his New York tour with an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night. Reed chatted with Fallon about his round and the pressure of playing with the lead on Sunday.
“The person who has the lead has more pressure than the guy faltering backwards,” Reed said. “Once Rory and I, we didn’t get off the greatest of starts…Jon Rahm and Rickie (Fowler) got off to great starts.”

Fallon also brought some comedy. He chided Reed on the first hole and being behind the tree before delivering a one-liner:
“You always want to keep your balls away from the tree,” Fallon said.
Reed could only laugh.
