Golf outings are typically defined by their gimmicks; some allow for drives from forward tees, others allow kicks or throws, mulligans or strings. However, at The Derek Jeter Celebrity Invitational, the event organizers had something else in mind: a living statue.

The DJCI is played annually in Las Vegas at Shadow Creek Golf Club, a Tom Fazio-designed gem in the desert. Previous attendees of the tournament include Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Ken Griffey, Jr., Cal Ripken, Jr., Russell Wilson, Mike Piazza, Jorge Posada, Rob Riggle, Brandi Chastain and Jerome Bettis, among others.
This year, the DJCI also hosted a living statue that many of the celebrity participants assumed wouldn’t scare the living daylights out them. Obviously, they were wrong and the results were hilarious.
Among those who were caught off guard were former NFL safety Ed Reed, former NBA All-Star Ray Allen, the host himself, Jeter, professional golfer and social media star Paige Spiranac, former MLB all-star David Ross, former NFL wide receiver Amani Toomer, former NFL player and sports broadcaster Ahamd Rashad and radio broadcaster Leeann Tweeden.
Jeter’s The Players’ Tribune social media captured the reactions.
The DJCI raised over $1 million for the Turn 2 Foundation, which works to help youth all over the country reach their full potential by creating and supporting programs that promote leadership development, academic achievement, positive behavior, healthy lifestyles and social change.
“As we close out our fourth year in Las Vegas, I’d like to thank our friends, partners, sponsors and supporters for once again joining us for such a fantastic week,” Jeter said. “The funds contributed to Turn 2 this year are invaluable and will allow us to provide so many young people with the tools they need to excel in school, serve as leaders in their communities, and accomplish their dreams. The tremendous support we receive each year is a major factor in the continued success of this event, and that is something I am truly grateful for.”
