A lot of amateurs struggle with hitting their fairway woods off the fairway. Hoping they can reach the green, they end up topping the ball down the fairway and really disappoints them.
Most commonly, they are gripping the club too strongly because they are trying to hit it as hard and as far as they can, which causes them to shut the face and try to adjust in the milliseconds before impact.
Instead, get a nice neutral grip, ensure your clubhead is square, get a wider stance and squat a little lower in your address position, which will allow you to swing more around your body and make more shallow, solid impact.
