A public golf course with serious historical significance is the subject of a heated debate between residents and the University of Texas. Lions Municipal Golf Course, which sits on the university’s campus in Austin, was the first public course in the city, as well as one of the first desegregated course south of the Mason-Dixon line. Now the university is thinking of developing the land for housing.
It’s one of the most prized pieces of land in Austin.
It’s just been named one of America’s 11 most endangered historic places by the National Trust. Tonight, people golfing at “Muny” want to make sure this course stays where it is.
Advocates say that the course is popular for several reasons. For one, it’s the first public golf course in the city. And two, it’s one of the first courses in the South to become desegregated.
Now, its fate is unclear.
The land it sits on is owned by the University of Texas, which has talked about turning the land into a housing development.
In the quest to save the course, people involved in the fight started a Change.org petition, which is well worth a look.
