Before they were professionals, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were winning as amateurs. Welcome to our list of the top 10 best amateur moments in golf. While not all the players on here have claimed a PGA Tour victory or made millions of dollars like some of the others, it shouldn’t discount their place in history. Golf doesn’t care what your name is or what status you have, as long as you get the ball in the hole quicker than the next guy.
10. Dawson Armstrong
The 113th Western Amateur Championship came down to the absolute wire between Armstrong and opponent, Aaron Wise. On the second extra playoff hole, Wise sat 30 feet away from the pin for eagle. Armstrong was deep in a green-side bunker, short-sided to pin placed at the front of the green. Armstrong took a mighty whack, pops the ball out, and after two bounces, hits the pin and drops in for an eagle 3. An ecstatic Armstrong had to regroup and remain composed as his Wise could still drain his putt to tie. But it was not in the cards for Wise whose attempt drifted left, bringing the title to Armstrong.
