Tour Stops: Outside The Ropes At The Waste Management Phoenix Open

Welcome to Tour Stops, Back9Network’s in-depth look at the best restaurants, bars, events and more at each PGA Tour stop. For outside the rope access to living the golf lifestyle where the pros are, follow Tour Stop throughout the season.

The Waste Management Open returns today from (presumably) sunny Scottsdale, Ariz. As if hosting the game’s most exciting regular-season tournament wasn’t enough, the city — or better yet, the Phoenix-Scottsdale-Glendale region — will host the biggest event of the year: Super XLIX.

With so much going on in town this week, we had our pick of the litter to point you in the right direction for food, drink and entertainment if you’re attending either of these spectacular events. Below are our picks from outside the ropes at this week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open and Super Bowl:

Best Hotel/Resort: Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North

If you’re going to be in town for this epic week, you should probably take the time to pamper yourself and truly enjoy the week. The best place to do that is at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North.

Four Seasons Scottsdale offers all of the amenities one could want from a resort: top-notch dining, world class spa, access to one of the country’s premier golf mecca’s in Troon North, luxury accommodations, experiences (like be a cowboy for a day), two beautiful swimming pools and tennis courts, should you want to get in a little competitive workout.

Rooms and package deals start just under $500 a night, so you should be prepared to spend a little –but it’s worth it. You can book packages based on the type of experience you’d like, be it bed and breakfast, a spa package to keep the Mrs. happy while you’re out watching the Waste Management Open or a pool cabana package that lets you lounge in luxury.

Best Bar: Bottled Blonde

Looking for action, beer and good eats? The Bottled Blonde in Old Town Scottsdale is a must-visit. It’s jam-packed daily and will undoubtedly be one of the epicenters of action during this amazing week in Arizona. The Bottled Blonde features more than 9,000 square feet of covered dining and sits directly in the heart of the Old Town’s entertainment block. While there, try the wood-fired pizza and was it down with one of the many craft beers on tap.

Best Restaurant: Steak 44

I don’t know about you, but I feel like steak. Fortunately, Steak 44 is in Phoenix and carries a four-star rating. This is a high-end steakhouse with gourmet cuts, seafood and plenty of other high-quality options set against a modern backdrop for the venue. Steak 44 is actually a spinoff of the highly-regarded Lincoln Avenue Prime Steakhouse — and according to a recent AZ Central review — it lives up to its predecessor’s legacy.

Where to Play: Grayhawk Golf Club

Plenty has been said about Troon North — and with good reason — but just down the road, the Grayhawk Golf Club offers a professional level test of golf and is open to the general public. The former sight of the Open, many of the games biggest names have tackled the club’s Raptor and Talon courses.

Now, it is a little pricey to play during Waste Management week with tee times fetching close to $300 a person, but you are out there to enjoy yourself, aren’t you? Indulge. It feels good, trust us.

The post-round scenery isn’t too bad, either. In fact, if there’s a pro who was born to have his own restaurant, it’s Phil Mickelson. And at Grayhawk Golf Club, you can kick back with a cheeseburger and watch a game while surrounded by Mickelson memorabilia. Sprawl out on the leather couches, check out the gorgeous McDowell Mountains and hey, maybe order another burger-it’s what Phil would do.

What to Do: DIRECTV Super Fan Fest

The DIRECTV Super Fan Fest is easily the biggest party in the area for one reason – it runs all week. DIRECTV hosts a party every night at Pendergast Family Farm, with different stars showing up each night and performances throughout the week from the Zac Brown Band, Jason Derulo, Calvin Harris, Rihanna, Snoop Dogg and Imagine Dragons.
