Davis Love III To Get A Shot At Ryder Cup Redemption

Since September, we’ve waited to find out who the Ryder Cup Task Force would tap to captain the United States in 2016. Fortunately, the wait is now over.

Davis Love III, captain of the U.S. squad at Medinah in 2012, will lead the team into battle at Hazeltine in 2016, looking to avenge the devastating loss suffered in Chicago three years ago.

On Tuesday, Jeff Rude and John Maginnes talked about Love’s shot at redemption and got the opinion of former Ryder Cup captain — the always out-spoken Paul Azinger:

“If true, Davis is an excellent choice for many reasons,” Azinger told Back9Network’s Jeff Rude. “He’s still connected to the players. He was very prepared and thorough in 2012. Davis will bring much needed continuity to the process. Remember Tony Jacklin and Bernhard Gallacher lost a few times before they won. Davis is a PGA guy as well. I had no interest in being the captain in 2016 for many reasons, personal and business. I suggested Davis to the powers that be, at the PGA. Davis will bring alongside future and past captains. I fully support Davis and will gladly help out if asked. This will be a popular choice amongst the players.”

Multiple players called for Fred Couples to captain the team in 2016 but the duty fell to Love who, despite being on the losing end of things at Medinah, led well and saw his boys take a four-point lead into Sunday Singles matches. Unfortunately, the Europeans matched the largest comeback in Ryder Cup history and retained the cup.

The Europeans are expected to name their captain on Wednesday.
