Ian Poulter Gets Radio Show, Meets Baba Booey

Ian Poulter, the most outspoken opponent of fans screaming “Baba Booey” at golf tournaments, has met the man behind the iconic phrase.

The golfer was in New York on Thursday to announce that he and Henrik Stenson will have their own shows on the PGA Tour Radio channel on SiriusXM starting in 2014. SiriusXM also broadcasts the ever-popular “Howard Stern Show,” whose executive producer is Gary Dell’Abate, a.k.a. Baba Booey.

The phrase took off so much this summer that Stern and his staff began rating the quality of the “Baba Booey” shouts they heard. And Poulter sounded off on Twitter. He even got into a little banter with Stern.

Who knows if Stern himself was behind that tweet, but Poulter and Dell’Abate were friendly on Thursday, considering they’re sort of working for the same company now. Dell’Abate discussed the encounter on the “The Wrap-Up Show,” which comes on after the “Stern Show” and is hosted by Dell’Abate and Jon Hein

“So I’m walking in our compound and I see the head of our whole company walking a guy around and he says, “Hey, I want to introduce you to golfer Ian Poulter,” Dell’Abate said. “I’m like, I know that name. Oh, oh, oh, OH, OH! So it turns out that Sirius just signed him to do something on one of the channels here, so he’s up here doing stuff …

“He was a super nice guy. Way younger than I thought he would be. When I read the quotes, I thought he was like an old dude, you know, an old stuck-up dude. And he said to me, ‘Dude, I didn’t know what ‘Baba Booey’ meant, now I totally get it.’ He was like really funny about it and he was just like, ‘I didn’t understand what it was. It was strange and I thought people were pissing off the game.’ He was really nice.”

Hein: “He must have been thrilled to meet the actual Baba Booey.”

Dell’Abate: “He was, he really was. We took a picture in front of a Baba Booey poster.”

Very interesting. Do you think Poulter will hear more “Baba Booey” bombs now? If so, how will he handle them now that he knows the man for which they’re named?

As for the golfers’ radio shows, Poulter’s should be interesting. Just follow him on Twitter and you’ll see he’s not one to keep opinions to himself.

Stenson, meanwhile, has enjoyed a phenomenal year and has every right to soak up the opportunities that come with it. But does he have a personality for radio? We know he has a passion for golf, but will that translate over the airwaves to listeners?
