Lee Westwood made history during the first round of the 2013 U.S. Open on Thursday… but it wasn’t the type of history he was hoping for. Co-leading and 3-under at the the time, Westwood tried to reach the green on No. 12 from the rough. Instead he became the first player to hit one of the famous Merion wicker baskets. He went on to double bogey the hole, falling two shots off the lead.
This wasn’t Westwood’s only odd moment of the round either. Earlier, an errant shot sailed into the crowd where a fan made a spectacular catch.
