Patrick Reed Clarifies Comments: Aspires To Reach Top 5

While golfers near and far were debating whether Patrick Reed was confident or cocky, a top-five player or a top-notch schmuck, Callaway Senior Vice President of Marketing Harry Arnett spoke with the man himself Monday on his “Callaway Talks” podcast.

Of course, Arnett quickly asked the 23-year-old Callaway staffer about his post-round comments on Sunday after winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship. In case you missed them, they went like this to a live TV audience: “Now I have three wins out here on the PGA Tour. I just don’t see a lot of guys that have done that, besides Tiger Woods, of course, and, you know, the other legends of the game. It’s just one of those things, I believe in myself and – especially with how hard I’ve worked – I’m one of the top five players in the world.”

With Arnett, Reed clarified those comments a bit, saying he was still in the heat of the moment when that interview was conducted, and being a top-five player is one of his aspirations.

“One of my goals is to become one of the top players in the world, and it’s not something that’s going to happen overnight,” Reed said on the podcast. “It’s something that I’m going to have work very hard (at) to get to that point. You look at all these other guys that are top-five, top-10 players in the world, they don’t get there overnight. It takes years of great play. And I just feel like I’m off to a good start and I know that at some point, if I continue practicing or working hard and continue to have chances to win on Sundays, that I have an opportunity to reach my goal of becoming a top-five player in the world.”
