‘Slaying The Tiger’ Author Shane Ryan On Patrick Reed: ‘He Can Be A Prickly Pear’

Patrick Reed’s name was all over the news this weekend, though not for the reasons the four-time PGA Tour winner would’ve liked.

Reed is one of a number of tour players profiled in Shane Ryan’s upcoming book, Slaying the Tiger: A Year Inside the Ropes on the New PGA Tour, and the subject of a blog post promoting the book which portrayed Reed as a brash, unapologetic villain, whose rise to PGA Tour stardom is shrouded in controversy.

Ryan’s post includes stories of Reed’s alleged transgressions — including cheating and covering up an alcohol-related arrest — while in college, discusses how his behavior has led to a lack of friendships on and off the course and details a strained relationship with his family. The piece also includes excerpts of conversations with Reed’s former college coaches at both the University of Georgia and Augusta State.

Back9Network’s Shane Bacon spent time with Ryan Tuesday, breaking down the new book, its allegations and more. To see the author’s reactions, view the video above.

Reed and his management team released a statement, debunking the accusations.

“The accusations that were made against me are serious and were intended to damage my reputation and character. They will not be taken lightly,” Reed said in a statement to Golf Channel released through his representation at IMG. “My team and my representatives are looking into all aspects of this matter, and we look forward to setting the record straight. For now, I’m staying focused on my life in the present and being the best husband, father and golfer I can be.”

Slaying the Tiger: A Year Inside the Ropes on the New PGA Tour is set to be released on May 26.
