The last group out on Saturday was a tale of two completely different rounds for Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy. Despite his advantage off the tee, it was McIlroy who was playing catch-up all day. Spieth opened the round with a birdie on the second hole and expanded his advantage over McIlroy to five by the 11th tee.
Elsewhere, Smylie Kaufman, Bernhard Langer and Hideki Matsuyama were hanging tough in difficult conditions.
Spieth’s lead was as big as four shots teeing off on the 17th hole, but a bogey-double bogey finish brought him back to the field and opened up a plethora of possibilities for Sunday at the Masters.
Besides Kaufman, Langer and Matsuyama, the likes of Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Danny Willet, Lee Westwood and Brandt Snedeker are within four shots. McIlroy sits in a tie for 11th five shots back and by no means out of it.
