The USGA Botched Another U.S. Open

For 73 holes of the U.S. Women’s Open, the USGA did a good job of not inserting themselves into the proceedings. That ended on the second hole of the three-hole aggregate playoff between Brittany Lang and Anna Nordqvist when Nordqvist inadvertently grounded her club in a bunker.

In this case at least, the breach was conclusive and correctly assessed, but the whole thing had a feeling of deja vu with what happened just weeks ago with Dustin Johnson at Oakmont.

And in another dose of “here we go again,” USGA president Diana Murphy made news for all the wrong reasons during the trophy presentation.

Brittany Lang had just won the U.S. Open. Brittany Lang was ready to receive the biggest trophy of her career. And then Brittany Lang wasn’t even sure if she was being awarded the trophy because Murphy butchered her name over and over again. Watch the video and try not to cringe.

Thankfully, mercifully, we only have one more USGA-run event left this season: the U.S. Senior Open next month.
