If the name Andrew Landry rings a bell, it’s because he was the 36-hole leader at the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2016. It’s his sole claim to golf fame, and Landry would rather be known for something else.
On Sunday at the Valero Texas Open, Landry became something else – a PGA Tour champion.
Mullinax Shoots Course Record, Rockets Up Valero Leaderboard
Landry won his first Tour title firing a 69 on the final day to edge Sean O’Hair and Trey Mullinax by two shots. Mullinax, who set a course record on Saturday with a 62, shot a 69 in the final round.

Landry is the latest first-time winner on the PGA Tour and the former Arkansas Razorback celebrated in typical Texas style, donning cowboy boots to accept the championship trophy.
Landry won his first title by playing the last 53 holes at 15-under with only one bogey. On Sunday, he made a bogey at the 11th hole and cruised to his first tour title.
“A lot of hard work obviously,” Landry told Amanda Balionis of CBS Sports about the win. “Today was a grind, especially on the back nine.”
Landry has had a chaotic season to date. He has played in 11 tournaments but missed the cut five times. The other six times he made the cut, however, Landry has been in contention with four top-10 finishes and his first Tour win. Landry’s closet call to date at his first victory was earlier this season at the CareerBuilder Challenge when he lost in a playoff to Jon Rahm. Coming into this week, Landry had missed four of the last five cuts. He did make the cut at RBC Heritage last week and tied for 42nd place.
Rahm Survives Playoff for Second PGA Tour Win
Landry has other professional wins, including two wins on the Web.com, but picked up that first win after a near miss earlier this season. He came into the tournament ranked 114th in the world and rose to 66th in the world with the victory. He began the year ranked 174th in the world.
