It’s always nice ending a round of golf on a high note, and there’s usually no higher note than walking off the course with an ace. That’s exactly how Angel Cabrera capped off his final round at the Shell Houston Open on Sunday. With the tee times moved up due to impending storms, the 47-year-old Argentine fought his way through the rain drops on the 238 yard par-3 ninth hole, his 18th of the day, and hit his patented baby cut to perfection. The ball took a couple hops and then rolled in like a putt for the hole-in-one. The 2009 Masters champion finished with a closing 70, good enough for a T34. He now heads to Augusta next week with a little bit more confidence in addition to that green jacket.
However, it was Russell Henley who took home the title after he put together a Sunday comeback to remember. Starting the round four shots back of 54-hole leader Sung Kang, Henley closed the gap quickly making five birdies in his first eight holes. After a costly double on the same par-3 ninth hole where Cabrera made his ace, Henley righted the ship with a bounce-back birdie on 10. Then added four more down the stretch, bringing his final birdie total to 10 (!) on the day, to finish at -20 and close out his third PGA Tour title. The Georgia Bulldog alum also punched the final ticket to next week’s Masters, as well as the 2017 PGA Championship.
Sung Kang recorded his best PGA Tour finish as runner-up. He set a 36-hole tournament record at -16 after the first two days, but couldn’t quite hold it together during the weekend, especially on Sunday where he failed to make a single birdie over his final 10 holes.
After a promising start, Rickie Fowler finished in a tie for third along with Luke List. It also should be noted the young Spaniard Jon Rahm notched his fourth straight top 10 to go along with his victory at the Farmers Insurance Open back in late January.
