Sawgrass Claims Another Victim: Lahiri Makes 10

TPC Sawgrass is no stranger when it comes to high numbers, and Friday at the Players Championship was no exception. The first victim was India’s Anirban Lahiri who was cruising along during the second round at even par for the tournament looking like he was going to make the cut. Then he reached the infamously difficult par-4 18th hole, and that’s when disaster struck.

After hooking his drive into the water, Lahiri took a drop and decided to play it safe with an iron. Unfortunately, he overcooked that one into the drink as well. He reloaded once more, this time with a fairway metal in hand, and sure enough found the water yet again. Lahiri finally kept one on dry land, missed a putt and tapped in for a sextuple-bogey 10.

This is what the aftermath looked like:

Lahiri ended up missing the cut, but at least he took it in stride!

As expected, the island green par-3 17th toyed with players’ emotions yet again on Friday. The worst of the bunch came from Zac Blair who put three in the water en route to another sextuple-bogey. In fact, his whole group found the water at least once. But it was only Blair who chose to go full Tin Cup and not go to the drop zone. Respect.

After two rounds, Louis Oosthuizen and Kyle Stanley lead at 9-under. Jason Day is at 2-under, while World No.1 Dustin Johnson and No.2 Rory McIlroy are nine shots back at even par. One of the biggest surprises on Friday was 54-year-old Vijay Singh who fired a stellar 68 and is looking to become the oldest winner in PGA Tour history. Phil Mickelson will also play the weekend for the first time since 2012, however, Jordan Spieth will not after missing the cut at Sawgrass for the third consecutive year.
