Anna Nordqvist Wins Rain-Shortened Evian

Redemption sure is sweet. After a heartbreaking rules violation cost Anna Nordqvist in a playoff in last year’s Women’s U.S. Open, the Swede emerged victorious on Sunday at the Evian Championship, marking her first major win since 2009.

During a week that started with controversy as LPGA Tour officials decided to wipe away first round scores due to weather and shortening it to a 54-hole event, Nordqvist came from five shots behind firing a 5-under par 66 in the final round to win in a playoff against American Brittany Altomare.

On yet another rainy, cold day at Evian Resort Golf Club in France, both players found the rough off the tee on the par-4 18th and were forced to lay up. It even started to hail as they prepared for their third shots, but course workers did their best to get rid of the standing water from the green.

Then the 30-year-old Nordqvist, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis two and a half months ago, holed a 4-foot putt for bogey for the win and her second major. She earned $547,500 for the victory.

“It’s been very testing,” said Nordqvist after the round, “but I couldn’t be more proud.”

Altomore finished runner-up, her best finish on the LPGA Tour. Lydia Ko, Katherine Kirk and Moriya Jutanugarn tied for third.

Here’s a look at the highlights and results from the year’s final major.
