History was made at the Senior Open Championship on Sunday where Bernhard Langer won his 10th senior major in gritty fashion at Royal Porthcawl in Wales. Battling the elements and a case of laryngitis, the 59-year-old German shot a 1-over 72 in the final round to win by three shots over Corey Pavin.
Th victory marks Langer’s third major win this year which include the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship. It’s also his third Senior Open title joining Tom Watson and Gary Player as the only men to reach this milestone.
Besides the obvious significance of watching one of the greatest players over 50 years of age to ever play the game, Langer is the first man to ever get to double digit major wins, passing Gary Player’s unofficial record of nine (Player won the Senior Open Championship three times prior it being declared a major in 2003.) The official record was eight by Jack Nicklaus.
While Langer’s putting style has been the subject of some controversy recently, he punches his ticket to peg it with the young guns during the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.
