Horschel Beats Day in Playoff, Wins Byron Nelson

18 holes weren’t enough to determine a winner on Sunday during the final round of the AT&T Byron Nelson. Billy Horschel and Jason Day went toe-to-toe in down the stretch at TPC Four Seasons Resort making one unbelievable birdie after another in dramatic fashion separating themselves from the pack leading to a sudden death playoff. First up was Horschel who drained this monster 60-foot birdie putt on the par-4 14th which got him to -11 and into a tie for the lead. According to the PGA Tour, this was the longest putt he has holed in his career!

And then in heroic fashion Day took the lead right back after the unlikeliest of birdies par-4 15th. After driving it wayward to the right and punching out from under a tree, he put himself in a terrible spot with a downhill lie, over a bunker and little green to work with. The next thing us viewers saw when CBS came back from commercial break was the ball rolling in the hole, Day raising his arms in joy, and Jim Nantz increasing the volume of his voice ever so gracefully in excitement. Here’s the whole sequence in full in case you missed it:

Horschel then made a timely birdie on the par-5 16th, and Day failed to convert his own, leaving them tied for the lead. After pars on 17 and 18, where Day had a birdie putt to win, they went back to 18 for the first playoff hole. They both hit the green with their approaches, but Day missed a four-footer for par giving Horschel the victory.

This is 30-year-old’s fourth PGA Tour win, and his first since 2014 when he went back-to-back to win the BMW Championship and Tour Championship, and ultimately the FedEx Cup. It also comes a week after he apologized to his fans for throwing a club “at” his caddie and missing the cut at the Players.

James Hahn finished in solo third, but his effort on the 18th hole to tie needs to be noted:
