The Road Hole 17th at the Old Course at St. Andrews is one of the most iconic and difficult holes in the world, but during this week’s Senior Open Championship, English pro Mark James caught one of the worst breaks ever captured on video.
Sitting at 2-over par for his first round, James teed it up on the famous hole only to see his ball strike a seagull during its flight, ricocheting the ball to the right and over the boundary fence that separates the golf course from the Jigger Inn, a restaurant that sits only feet from the 17th fairway.
The bad break cost James a penalty in brutal fashion leading to a triple-bogey 7 on the hole and a first-round score of 5-over par 77. The projected cutline is hovering around even par meaning that the 17-time European Tour winner will have some work to do during his second round on Friday.
