Bubba Watson is a different kind of dude. Whether it be the pink shaft in his driver, the way he sees a golf course or his volatile temper, Bubba never ceases to entertain — or annoy — golf fans around the world.
On Thursday at the Tour Championship, Bubba did something very Bubba-like: he went off the reservation with a request for U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III.
“I sent him a text that said, ‘Can I be an assistant captain if you don’t pick me?’ So I put it out there,” Watson said. “I want to be a part of the team no matter what.”
This is unheard of in Ryder Cups. Sure, we’ve seen the likes of Sergio Garcia in 2010, or more recently, Ian Poulter named as assistant captains while still in the midst of their playing days, but that was due to waning interest in the game and injury, respectively. What Bubba is requesting is that a borderline captain’s pick still get invited to the biennial matches even if he doesn’t make the cut to be on the team.
You have to hand it to Watson, he’s doing his best to get to Minnesota next week. Maybe his buddy Webb Simpson gave him the inspiration to send the text.
