Rookie Cold Tops a Shot, Laughs it Off Like a Pro

We’ve all been there. You just nutted a drive down the middle fairway on a par-5 and are in prime position to go for the green in two. You unsheathe your trusty 3-wood, take a couple of practice swings and stare down the pin. This is your defining moment.

You take the club back like you’ve done hundreds of times on the range…and then golf happens. That majestic baby fade that you visualized in your mind while you were waiting for the green to clear ends up being an embarrassing cold top that dribbles down the fairway, usually followed by a four-letter expletive.

Don’t worry, it happens to the best players in the world, too! The only difference is that you don’t have a gallery or TV cameras following you.

On Thursday during the first round of the John Deere Classic, rookie lefty Cody Gribble proved yet again that Tour pros are human when he hit this hilarious worm-burner for his second shot on the par-5 17th hole at TPC Deere Run. Afterward, all he could do was laugh (please note: not curse, swear, throw a club, etc).

Sometimes you just have to laugh it off.

Being the pro that he is, Gribble put the next one on the green and made par. He shot a 1-under 70 on the day leaving him seven shots off the pace.

Charles Howell III and the hatless wonder Ollie Schniederjans share the first round lead in the Quad Cities after firing a pair of 8-under 63s. Here’s a look at the highlights from day one:
