Golf is hard. Everybody knows that. Whether you are a weekend warrior or the defending Masters champion, nobody is immune to the dreaded shank. For the second day in a row at Augusta National, 2016 champion Danny Willett got off to a dreadful start in his title defense. On Thursday, the 29 year-old Englishman started with an ugly double bogey. However, he outdid himself on Friday when he posted a snowman (aka a quadruple bogey eight), which included this awful shank.
It began with a drive that sailed right and the ball came to rest just outside a fairway bunker, but close enough to where his stance would be affected. In an attempt to advance it, Willett balanced with this toes on the grass and his heels hovering above the bunker. As you can see, it wasn’t ideal. He ended up hitting it right off the hosel and into the pine straw. From there it all went downhill, much like his week, leading to a missed cut.
Danny Willett outside the cut line. Willett would be 1st defending champion to miss cut since Mike Weir in 2004 & just 5th last 25 years.

At least he still gets to keep his green jacket!
