Darren Clarke’s Cold Shank Is A Sight To See

The thing about golf is that it’s hard. Whether you’re an amateur or a former Ryder Cup captain, we are all prone to the dreaded mis-hit, and even worse, a shank. Most of the time for us mortals when it happens, we are in the comfy confines of our local club or muni. However, when you’re a professional on tour, chances are there’s a camera around. Unfortunately for Darren Clarke, there was and it was rolling.

Facing a very difficult third shot on the 14th hole during the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic, Clarke attempted the high flop, but the only thing he caught cleanly was the hosel. The ball went flying sideways and into the greenside bunker. Sam Torrance summed it up perfectly at the end of the clip: “Well, he’s walking over there to the bunker thinking, ‘Oh, God, I hope that wasn’t on television.'”

But wait, there’s more! That same day, Clarke was the subject of a Twitter exchange which he did not appreciate involving golf writer Robert Lusetich, which prompted this tasteful, mic-dropping tweet:

Spoken like a true captain!
