Anything to save a stroke.
On Saturday at the CareerBuilder Challenge, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano was working hard to try and make the 54-hole cut. Coming off of bogeys on two of his last three holes, Fdez-Castano hit his approach into the par-4 9th hole at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course nearly into the water hazard guarding the left side of the hole.
With the ball in the hazard, GFC had a few options under the rules, but he chose to play it as it lies. Always a sharp-dressed man, Fded-Castano decided to save his pants a water logging and stripped down to his underwear to wade into thigh-high water to play the shot.
He escaped pretty well, but was unable to convert the unlikely up-and-down. Unfortunately for GFC, he struggled on his way into the house and missed the cut. On the bright side, at least his trip into a water hazard didn’t end in similar fashion to that of Woody Austin.
