One of the best perks of being a professional golfer is getting your golf clubs for free. However, when the tournament week starts, most of the equipment trucks and Tour reps hit the road for the next stop, taking their stockpile of clubs with them.
On the off chance that a player breaks a club or needs a quick fix, folks scramble around to get the pro what they need. Yet on Saturday night of this week’s The Northern Trust, English pro Tyrrell Hatton took matters into his own hands.
Following a third round 2-over par 73, which included 34 putts, Hatton was in the market for a new putter. Through three rounds, Hatton’s strokes gained: putting was losing 4.978 to the field average. 2½ miles from Ridgewood Country Club, there was a Golf Galaxy store chock-full of putters.
A few minutes later, Hatton walked out with a PING Sigma G Darby putter for $149, along with a new cord grip for $12.99. On Sunday, Hatton fired a 7-under par 64 that required just 27 putts and a strokes gained: putting mark of +3.014.

“Well that’s the best $172 I’ve ever spent,” Hatton tweeted. “Was so nice to hole some putts again today, new putter worked it’s magic!”
Hatton moved from 92nd to 71st in the FedEx Cup standings thanks to his T20 finish. That T20 finish was worth $101,160, so it would appear Hatton made the right choice to fork out some of his own cash on Saturday night.
