Watch: Paul Lawrie Shanks it From the Hazard

Hosting your own professional tournament has its perks. For example, your name is on the event and it usually benefits a charity of your choice. Unfortunately, if you’re playing in it, there’s usually an added element of pressure to not embarrass yourself.

This week on the European Tour at Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play — you guessed it — Paul Lawrie found himself in a precarious situation on Friday with his match on the line. With his ball sitting in a hazard, he went for the hero shot like any good host should.

The 1999 Open Champion’s ball was in the greenside water hazard on the par-3 17th hole at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach in Germany, but it was playable. Already dormie and with his opponent, Spain’s Alejandro Cañizares, on the green, Lawrie knew he needed to make something happen so he decided to ditch his socks and shoes and wade into the murky water.

After two practice swings, Lawrie pulled the trigger and sent a hosel rocket screaming over the green prompting a concession and effectively ending the match. Hey, at least he tried!

Cañizares earned his way into the semifinals against fellow countryman Adrian Otaegui, while Germany’s Marcel Siem squares off against Sweeden’s Johan Carlsson in front of his home fans.
