Whether you’re an amateur or one of the best players in the world, nobody is immune to the dreaded shank. On Thursday during the first round of the Tour Championship, Jhonattan Vegas was the purveyor of a nasty hosel rocket that almost took out an unsuspecting fan in the process.
Teeing off on the tough par-4 eighth hole at East Lake Golf Club, Vegas opted to play it safe with an iron to avoid the trouble that runs down both sides of the fairway. Turns out, that was the wrong decision.
Although he managed to still hit it 238-yards, his target was not the sixth tee box. The ball took off on an odd trajectory and looked more like a stray bullet rather than a golf shot, knocking a spectator right out of his chair.
Vegas, who started the week in 17th place in the overall standings, was able to salvage bogey the hard way en route to a 2-over par 72.
One player that didn’t seem to have any trouble during the first round was Kyle Stanley. He leads after firing a 6-under par 64. He holds a two-shot lead over reigning U.S. Open Champion Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger Webb Simpson and Paul Casey.
Jordan Spieth, who entered the week in the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings posted 3-under par as did his good buddy Justin Thomas. Current World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is right there as well with a 2-under par 68.
