Spieth Wins Travelers in Typical Spieth Fashion

Jordan Spieth won his very first PGA Tour event with a hole-out bunker shot at the 2013 John Deere Classic. On Sunday, he did the same for his 10th! The two-time major winner holed out from the bunker, again, on the first playoff hole in epic fashion to edge Daniel Berger to capture the Travelers Championship.

Entering the final round leading by one at TPC River Highlands, Spieth got off to a hot start with birdies on one and two widening his lead, but then things started going sideways for him, especially with the putter. He managed to right the ship turning in 1-under 34, but after three-putt bogeys on 12 and 14, he found himself tied for the lead with a surging Berger, who fired a closing 67. After 72 holes, the two were deadlocked at -12 and headed back to the par-4 18th for a sudden death playoff. That’s when it all happened.

After less than stellar drives from both players, Spieth hit his approach into the front bunker while Berger was just over the back of the green. Spieth was up first….and the rest was history:

While it wasn’t technically a walk-off, it was a good as one as Berger couldn’t hole it from off the green giving Spieth his coveted 10th win and giving us by far one of the best celebrations the game has ever seen. Dare we even say it was Tiger-esque?

“For the bunker shot to go in, that was awesome. I don’t know if I’ll ever have a moment like that again,” Spieth said afterward.

The 23-year-old now finds himself in some rare company as he becomes the second youngest to reach 10 wins. Only Tiger Woods got there faster. Spieth is also now eight out of nine converting 54-hole leads. By definition, that means he’s a closer. More importantly, the victory put him over the $30M PGA Tour career earnings mark, making him the youngest player ever to reach that milestone.

Charley Hoffman and Danny Lee finished in a tie for third at -10, while Patrick Reed, Paul Casey and fan-favorite Boo Weekly tied for fifth. Rory finished T17 after he tied the low round of the day with a 6-under 64 using his third different putter of the week.

Here’s a look at the final round highlights and results from the 2017 Travelers Championship:
