Justin Thomas’ Smash Factor Is Insane

How far can you hit a mini-golf putter? What about a shovel? Whatever you think, we basically guarantee Justin Thomas hits it further than you. The two-time PGA Tour winner this season may only be 5’10” and 145 pounds, but don’t let his size fool you. He currently ranks 12th in driving distance this season with a modest 306.5-yard average. How can this be? Well, thanks to the magical powers of Trackman, we found out that his peak “smash factor” is the highest on Tour at 1.52. Smash factor essentially is ball speed divided by clubhead speed. For perspective, the second highest is Dustin Johnson at 1.51.

The good folks at Golf Digest wanted to find out how this sheer power would translate when using other things besides a golf club. Thomas goes all out with everything from a kid’s golf club to a whiffle ball bat. But the most astounding was his attempt with a mini-golf putter which he hit a mind-blowing 253 yards, with the same smash factor as his driver!
