Justin Thomas Wins Historic Fifth Title This Year

Justin Thomas’ stellar season continued on Monday when he held off Jordan Spieth to capture the Dell Technologies Championship to earn his first career FedEx Cup Playoff win. The 24-year-old superstar (Thomas) followed up an 8-under 63 he shot on Sunday which included 12 three’s on the card, by firing a final round 5-under 66 en route to his fifth victory of the year.

Thomas and Marc Leishman shared the 54-hole lead, but that was quickly erased by Spieth on Monday who came out scorching hot going 5-under par on his first four holes to grab the solo lead. However, Thomas didn’t waiver and responded with an early birdie on the par-5 second and then holed a 32-foot eagle putt on the short par-4 fourth hole to tie for the lead.

Spieth went out in 30, as did Leishman, but the big Aussie faltered down the stretch taking him out of contention. He still finished solo third. Meanwhile, Thomas posted a 32 of his own and found himself tied for the lead.

Spieth then took the outright lead again on 13 with a birdie, but Thomas, who was playing in the group behind countered with a birdie of his own on the same hole.

Spieth made bogey on the par-4 14th and Thomas took a two shot advantage when he birdied the par-4 15th.

Thomas parred the last three holes to lock up his fifth win of the season putting him in some elite company with Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and of course, Jordan Spieth, as the only players to win five times in a season before the age of 25 since 1960.

Jon Rahm and Paul Casey finished in a tie for fourth, while a host of other players including Phil Mickelson finished tied for sixth, which marks his first top-10 since June. World No.1 Dustin Johnson ended up T18.

With two events left, Jordan Spieth has a narrow lead in the FedEx Cup standings over Justin Thomas, followed by Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama and Jon Rahm.

The PGA Tour is off next week, but returns for the third stop of the FedEx Cup playoffs in two weeks with the BMW Championship at Conway Farms GC, Lake Forest, Illinois (Top-70).
