Pro Misses Child’s Birth Due to “Good Run of Form”

The birth of a child is one of life’s greatest miracles, but so is finally figuring out your golf swing. If you need any proof, ask European Tour pro Lee Slattery who decided to play in this week’s Omega European Masters in Switzerland even though his wife was due to have their second child.

The 39-year-old Englishman got off to a rough start this year, but righted the ship with a runner-up finish in last week’s Czech Masters as well as notching a T-9 and a T-19 in his two prior starts.

On Tuesday, Slattery got the news that his wife was in labor. Instead of stepping away from the table on a heater, he watched his wife Faye deliver a little girl via FaceTime. While he was overjoyed, his focus never waivered. That’s why he’s a professional.

“I had two weeks off recently to spend time with her thinking she might be early like the first one,” Slattery said told the European Tour. “That didn’t happen, obviously, so I had to come away and play because I was on a good run of form.”

Unfortunately, the good form wasn’t there for Slattery on Thursday where he shot a 5-over 75 and now has some serious ground to make up if he wants to play the weekend.
