Lexi Thompson has had a rollercoaster season in 2018. Unable to find the winner’s circle and needing to take a self-mandated break from the game earlier this summer, the top-ranked American in the world took one final body blow on Friday in France.
Competing in the year’s final major, the Evian Championship, Thompson’s poor play left her battling to make the cut on Friday afternoon. Needing to make par to reach the weekend, an off-line approach rolled up against the edge of where the first cut meets the primary rough.
Facing the tricky lie, Thompson’s steep swing dug into the ground, advancing the ball only a few inches.
Oh no ? — Lexi needed to get this up and down at 18 to make the cut. Obviously a tricky chip, but what a brutal way to end the year’s last major. pic.twitter.com/dImJH8DcKO

Thompson let go of some frustration following the chunked chip by swinging her club through the air. Clearly feeling the gravity of the moment and perhaps, the season, Thompson welled up after she was unable to hole her fourth shot, leading to a missed cut.
Thompson shot rounds of 71-75 to post a 4-over par number.
“Her eyes immediately welled up with tears as she walked over toward her caddie.”

Four players, including Americans Amy Olson and Mo Martin, were tied for the 36-hole lead at 8-under par.
